The State Police Command in Kano State has arrested 98 suspects in September for crimes ranging from kidnapping to armed robbery and cattle rustling. The suspects were apprehended for various offences, including banditry and thuggery.
The State Police Command, in a statement to journalists, praised the efforts of its police officers and reaffirmed its determination to tackle and nip all forms of criminal activity in the bud.
The statement further stated that the arrest of the suspects was in accordance with the directives given by the IGP to all police commands to utilize the community policing tactics and strategy to ensure quality services.
The state police command, after reviewing the trends and patterns of criminal activity in Kano State, adopted strategies that focus on the application of both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to address and nip any form of criminal activity that may be affecting the state.
He said the Command used a carrot and stick approach to deal with 222 violent criminals known as “Yan-Daba” who had been involved in various criminal activities leading to death, injury and destruction of property over the years. He said the criminals had repented and surrendered their weapons to the Police Command.
He added that some of the non-repentant criminals had been arrested for various crimes while others were moving out of the country. He said the repentant ones were now cooperating with the Police in order to promote sustainable peace, economic development and development in the State.
He said that 98 suspects had been arrested during clearance operations conducted across certain flashpoints of the State between the 1st and 30th of September, including during and after the Maulud holiday and Independence Day celebrations. These arrests included those for culpable homicide, kidnappings, armed robbery and theft, fraud and drug dealing, among others.
64 suspects were arraigned in court while 34 are still under investigation. The suspects included 28 armed robbery suspects, 8 suspected kidnappers, 11 suspected drug dealers, 16 suspected thieves, 10 motor vehicle thieves, 3 tricycle thieves, 8 motorcycle thieves, 17 suspected gangsters (Yan Daba), and 3 suspected fraudsters.
The items recovered included 1 AK-47 gun, 1 Double Barel gun, 1 pistol, 1 locally made AK-47 rifle, 7 locally made guns, and 2 toy G-guns.
The other items recovered included 10 motor vehicles, 3 tricycles, 8 motorcycles, 3 cattle, 368 wraps of dry leaves suspected of being Indian Hemp, 53 bottles of pentacine injections suspected of being used for intoxication, 167 suspected diazepam drugs, 275 suspected exol tablets, 33) sharp knives, and 15 different sharp irons. The police also found 5 sacks of coils of cable wires, 85 pieces of counterfeit US Dollars, 1017 mobile phones, 4 laptop computers, and 7 ATM Cards.
