Kamala Harris pledges support for AI, crypto

Kamala Harris, the current U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate, has stepped into the cryptocurrency conversation with a strong message of support for digital assets and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation.

During a recent fundraiser in New York, Harris outlined her economic vision, promising to encourage technological advancements if elected in November.

In her speech, Harris emphasized the need for collaboration between small businesses, labour groups, and major corporations to ensure America’s competitive edge in emerging technologies.

“We will encourage innovative technologies like AI and digital assets while protecting consumers and investors,” she stated. Harris also promised to establish regulatory clarity, creating a business environment with “clear and consistent rules” to support these rapidly evolving sectors.

This is Harris’ first public statement on digital assets since becoming the Democratic nominee, a move that has sparked a 316% increase in crypto-related searches, according to data from Cryptorush.

The surge reflects the growing curiosity and anticipation surrounding her stance on cryptocurrencies, which had previously been a topic she avoided.

Her silence has raised concerns among some industry players, especially as the Biden administration has been more cautious toward the sector.

Harris’ new pro-innovation stance has raised hopes that her presidency could provide a friendlier environment for Bitcoin and other digital assets.

Analysts from VanEck suggest that her leadership might accelerate the structural changes needed to boost Bitcoin adoption.

They believe clearer regulations under a Harris administration could help Bitcoin outperform other cryptocurrencies by providing a solid framework for growth.

However, not everyone in the industry is convinced. Concerns remain about potential alliances Harris might form with crypto sceptics, such as Senator Elizabeth Warren.

If she retains figures like Gary Gensler as the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the industry could still face significant regulatory challenges. Gensler’s SEC has taken a strict stance on cryptocurrencies, heightening uncertainty for many crypto businesses.

As the November election draws near, the cryptocurrency community is also weighing the potential impact of a second Trump presidency.

Trump has demonstrated a more favourable approach to Bitcoin, supporting U.S. Bitcoin mining initiatives and pushing for deregulation in the sector. His administration is expected to adopt a more pro-business stance, possibly reducing regulatory hurdles for the crypto industry.

Harris’s recent remarks hint at a more innovation-friendly stance compared to the Biden administration. While she has yet to unveil detailed crypto policies, her recognition of digital assets as crucial to the future economy has given investors and crypto enthusiasts something to look forward to.
