The Labour Party in Enugu state has intensified its challenge against the gubernatorial election results, citing irregularities and presenting evidence challenging the victory of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Peter Mbah.
The party underscored its dissatisfaction with the decisions made by Election Tribunals and the Court of Appeal, asserting that the rulings do not reflect the true electoral stance of the people of Enugu state.
In a detailed statement issued by Malam Umar Farouk, the National Secretary of the Labour Party, the party highlighted key pieces of evidence it presented to contest the victory of Peter Mbah:
- Alleged presentation of a forged NYSC discharge certificate to INEC by Mbah, supported by testimony from the NYSC Director of Certification and a televised statement by the NYSC Director General.
- Submission of an NYSC disclaimer letter and a subpoenaed witness’s testimony challenging the authenticity of Mbah’s NYSC certificate.
- Conflicting information regarding Mbah’s claimed service as a Corps Member in Lagos while holding a Chief of Staff appointment in Enugu State.
- Presentation of purported INEC Form EC9 attached with the alleged forged NYSC Certificate.
- Claims of over-voting and non-compliance in specific LGAs, along with alleged inaction by INEC to annul results in areas with reported irregularities, contrary to the Electoral Act.
The Labour Party emphasized its substantial wins in other electoral positions in the state, indicating a discrepancy between these victories and the outcome of the governorship election.
Expressing concerns over potential repercussions, the party warned against undermining the will of Enugu voters, legitimizing certificate forgery, damaging the credibility of the NYSC, and tarnishing the reputation of the military overseeing the NYSC as a paramilitary body.
The party’s appeal to the Supreme Court urges a meticulous examination of the evidence presented, emphasizing the far-reaching implications if justice is not upheld in the Enugu case.
