The Lagos State Government announced the creation of the Cybersecurity Operations Centre (CSOC), which will act as the central location for real-time monitoring, detection, and response to cyber threats in the state.
This state-of-the-art facility was unveiled on Monday, May 20, by Olatunbosun Alake, the Honourable Commissioner for Science, Innovation and Technology, during the Year 2024 Ministerial Press Briefing.
It is expected to serve as the central hub for real-time state surveillance, detection, and response to cyber threats.
Newsng gathered that Lagos is also advocating for a State Innovation Bill, which would allow it to enact laws and policies that would advance the State’s technological advancement.
If the Innovation Bill is signed into law, it will provide technology companies registered in the State with incentive packages that will help them expand and promote technology development in the State.
Alake said that the cybersecurity initiative was a component of a larger plan to enhance state administration and general security.
The cybersecurity project entails joint ventures with top cybersecurity companies and global organisations. These partnerships would give the state access to state-of-the-art technologies and knowledge, strengthening its ability to fend off sophisticated cyberattacks.
Lagos State recently launched an extensive Data Protection Compliance Project in addition to the CSOC.
“The Commissioner averred that the objectives of the data protection compliance project are to safeguard the rights of natural persons to data privacy and foster safe conduct for transactions involving the exchange of personal data; prevent manipulation of personal data and ensure that Nigerian businesses remain competitive in international trade with best practice,” the statement from Alake read in part.
As part of this plan, government officials will participate in training on sensitization and awareness, and specialised Data Protection Officers will be appointed to various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
The Data Protection Compliance Project seeks to promote safe data transactions, protect people and companies’ rights to privacy, and keep Nigerian companies competitive in the global market.
