A group of Republican lawmakers is urging the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to move swiftly on President Trump’s executive order that would expand 401(k) investment options to include Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other alternative assets.

The letter, led by House Financial Services Committee Chairman French Hill and Capital Markets Subcommittee Chair Ann Wagner, stresses that the policy gives retirement savers the right to diversify beyond traditional stocks and bonds—several other lawmakers, including Reps. Frank Lucas, Warren Davidson, and Andrew Garbarino also signed on, describing the order as a way to give workers more freedom to build wealth.

SEC and Department of Labour rules limit most retirement plans to conventional assets. Lawmakers are pressing the SEC to revise these standards—particularly around “accredited investors” and “qualified purchasers”—so more Americans can access alternative investments. They argue that nearly 90 million people are locked out under existing rules.

The lawmakers framed the changes as both a matter of fairness and financial opportunity. They urged regulators to act quickly, saying broader access could help ordinary Americans achieve more secure retirements and bring alternative assets into mainstream retirement planning.
