Argentina international and former Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has completed the acquisition of Spanish third-division club UE Cornellà, news.ng reports.

This was disclosed by the club on its website on Thursday.

According to the club, the acquisition makes Messi the new owner of the club located in the Barcelona region of Spain.

“UE Cornellà announces that Argentinian footballer and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Leo Messi has formalised the acquisition of the club, becoming the new owner of the Baix Llobregat institution.

This move reinforces Messi’s close ties to Barcelona and his commitment to the development of sport and local talent in Catalonia — a connection rooted in his years at FC Barcelona and sustained ever since,” the club stated.

This comes barely two months after another football great, Cristiano Ronaldo, acquired a 25% stake in Spanish second-division club UD Almería in February 2026.
