Former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain superstar Lionel Messi has agreed to a contract extension with Inter Miami, the club and Major League Soccer (MLS) have confirmed.
MLS announced on Thursday via its Spanish-language account on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Official: Leo Messi will continue to be an MLS player with Inter Miami.”
The confirmation was followed by a short video posted on Inter Miami’s official X handle, showing Messi sitting at a table inside the club’s new stadium, which is still under construction, signing the new deal. The video carried the simple yet emotional caption:
“He’s Home.”
The 37-year-old Argentine legend, who joined Inter Miami in July 2023, has been instrumental in transforming the club’s fortunes both on and off the pitch. His arrival not only lifted Miami’s performances in the Leagues Cup but also triggered a surge in global attention, ticket sales, and broadcast viewership for American soccer.
Since joining, Messi has scored over 25 goals across all competitions and guided Miami to its first-ever trophy, the 2023 Leagues Cup, while mentoring a growing list of young talents at the club.
Though specific details of the contract extension were not disclosed, local reports suggest the new deal will keep the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner in Miami beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
