Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has expressed concern over the attitude and leadership of Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, describing their recent body language as a “big concern” amid the club’s dip in form.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, the ex-England captain suggested that Liverpool’s senior players appear “visibly frustrated” and “disconnected” on the pitch — a worrying sign for manager Jürgen Klopp as the season intensifies.
According to BBC Sport, Rooney, a five-time Premier League champion under Sir Alex Ferguson, said such signs of frustration from key figures could affect dressing-room morale and on-field cohesion, especially during difficult stretches of the campaign.
Liverpool has struggled to maintain consistency in recent weeks, dropping valuable points that have dented their title ambitions. Rooney’s remarks echo fans’ concerns about the team’s leadership and emotional balance heading into the final stretch of the season.
He said, “No one has seen this coming, it’s hit them quick, it’s hit them hard, and I think they’re struggling to find a way out of it,” he added.
“This is a time where the manager and the leaders in the team need to figure it out very quickly.
“Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, they’ve signed new deals, but I don’t think they’ve really led that team this season.
“I think body language tells you a lot, and I think we’re seeing slightly different body language from the two of them. They are the top two players on that team, and if their body language is not right, that affects everyone else.
“I might be wrong on this, but if I was a Liverpool fan or the manager, that would be a big concern for me.”
