Lagos lawyer and human rights activist Chief Malcolm Omirhobo has condemned federal lawmakers’ demands to increase their salary and allowances.
During a meeting on Tuesday, July 11, some members of the House of Representatives expressed their concerns regarding their salaries and allowances.
The lawmakers demanded an upward review of their salaries and allowances following the removal of fuel subsidy and the current economic situation in the country.
Omirhobo said the demand by the legislators is a misplaced priority and should not be entertained by those in authority.
According to him, the lawmakers need to be cognisance of why they are in the Federal Capital Territory on behalf of their constituents.
He wrote on Twitter:
”Just imagine these lousy, lazy, redundant, idle criminals! The minimum N30,000 has not been achieved; they want an increase in their pay.
”These so-called lawmakers don’t know why they are in Abuja. They are arrogating too much to themselves.”
Over the years, Nigerian federal legislators have come under attack due to their astronomical salaries and allowances.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has repeatedly called for the lawmakers’ pay to be reduced drastically.
Some Nigerians have also asked for one arm of the legislature to be scrapped to save funds for the country.
President Bola Tinubu seems to favour greasing the palm of the lawmakers as he recently allocated N70 billion for them as part of subsidy palliatives.
The move has already generated anger among the populace, with many saying the president’s action is insensitive at a time when the government plans to share N8,000 to 12 million households nationwide.
