Manchester City have responded to Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth by beating Chelsea 3–0 on Sunday afternoon, closing the gap to six points and reigniting the race for the Premier League title, news.ng reports.
City’s victory aligned with bookmakers’ expectations of them winning.
The Citizens broke the deadlock in the 51st minute after a goalless first half, as Nico O’Reilly headed in from close range into the high centre of the goal following an assist from Rayan Cherki to give his team the lead.
Chelsea were completely flat-footed, as statistics showed City’s dominance. The hosts doubled their lead six minutes later, courtesy of Marc Guehi, to make it 2–0.
Jeremy Doku sealed the victory in the 68th minute with a left-footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom left corner.
Meanwhile, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior, speaking after the match, said they were punished by a better Manchester City side.
He said, “We have to improve in terms of managing the difficult moments in games… When you play a team as good as Manchester City, they will punish that.”
City have moved up to 64 points; Arsenal remain on 70.
Elsewhere, Crystal Palace came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2–1, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a brace after William Osula’s opening goal in the 43rd minute.
Nottingham Forest drew 1–1 with Aston Villa, while Sunderland beat Tottenham Hotspur 1–0.
