Manchester United have strengthened their defensive options with the acquisition of promising young full-back Diego León from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño.
The 18-year-old Paraguay youth international has put pen to paper on a deal with the Red Devils, though the transfer remains subject to registration formalities.
“Manchester United are delighted to announce the signing of exciting young defender Diego León, subject to registration,” the club confirmed in an official statement.
León brings considerable experience despite his young age, having already established himself as a regular starter in South American football. “The talented full-back has already played 33 senior games, scoring 4 goals, for his club,” United noted, highlighting his attacking contributions from the defensive position.
The teenager, who celebrated his 18th birthday in April, represents a long-term investment for the Premier League giants as they continue to build for the future under their current management structure.
“Leon reached the age of 18 in April and as an emerging talent will be supported by our first team and the Academy whilst he settles into life in Manchester,” the club stated, outlining their development plans for the young defender.
The signing continues Manchester United’s strategy of identifying and securing promising young talent from around the world. León’s move from Cerro Porteño, one of Paraguay’s most successful clubs, demonstrates United’s global scouting network and commitment to nurturing international prospects.
As a Paraguay youth international, León will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of other South American defenders who have made successful transitions to English football. His impressive goal-scoring record for a defender suggests he could offer an additional attacking threat from the full-back position.
The completion of León’s registration will allow him to begin training with his new teammates and start the process of adapting to English football and life in Manchester.
