Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has announced a collaboration with Nigerian government agencies to establish the Llama Impact Accelerator—an ambitious program targeting Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven solutions for the country’s most pressing issues.

The tech giant is working alongside the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to bring this vision to life.

The accelerator is an eight-month comprehensive program supporting emerging startups that leverage open-source Llama models. Participants will develop innovative applications across three primary sectors: Agriculture, Security and Safety, and Healthcare. A wildcard category allows for creative AI implementations in other high-impact domains.

The program features a dual-phase approach: an intensive six-week incubation period providing technical training and expert mentorship, followed by an extended six-month support phase offering continued access to technical resources and networking opportunities.

Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa at Meta, emphasised the company’s commitment to making open-source AI accessible for addressing local challenges.

“We’re excited to partner with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to launch this AI Accelerator in Nigeria, a country with a robust innovation ecosystem,” she said.

Dada highlighted Nigeria’s expanding technology sector and substantial AI expertise as key factors making the country an optimal environment for developing scalable, locally originated AI solutions. She noted that the accelerator will provide local innovators with advanced tools, infrastructure, and guidance to build responsibly using open-source large language models like Meta’s Llama.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, described the collaboration as a significant advancement in the government’s strategy to cultivate a flourishing AI ecosystem within Nigeria.

“We see AI as a key driver for national development, and this program by Meta will equip innovators with the right tools and guidance to tackle some of our most pressing issues,” the Minister said.

Meta positions this accelerator within its broader mission to democratise responsible AI access and nurture local innovation throughout Nigeria. Through strategic partnerships with government entities, academic institutions, and civil society organisations, the program aims to build an inclusive and progressive AI community.

The initiative represents Meta’s ongoing commitment to supporting regional innovation while ensuring responsible AI development practices.

Startups interested in participating have until June 27, 2025, to submit their applications. Complete program information and application procedures are available at www.llamaimpactssa.splashthat.com.
