Meta Platforms Inc. has signed a licensing agreement with Reuters, granting it access to the news agency’s content.

Meta and Reuters’ parent firm, Thomson Reuters, have not disclosed the financial terms of this agreement, which is Meta’s first news deal in years.

This arrangement comes as Meta reduces news material on its platforms in response to regulatory criticism and tensions over revenue-sharing with publishers.

According to the contract, Meta will make Reuters material available to its Meta AI chatbot for consumers.

The chatbot will use licensed articles to deliver information about news and current events.

Every prompt answer generated in this manner is intended to include a link to the relevant Reuters report.

The functionality went live in the United States today.

Meta AI, the Llama series’ chatbot, is available on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

It is also available to users of the smart glasses that the business co-developed with Ray-Ban parent Luxottica Group S.p.A. last year.

To date, Meta AI has mostly focused on tasks such as making purchasing recommendations and assisting users in solving math issues.

According to Axios, Meta’s licensing agreement with Reuters is scheduled to last several years.

Meta AI, the company’s chatbot, is available on Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

The social media company did not specify whether it will utilise Reuters content to train its large-language algorithm.

In the future, Meta’s AI training efforts may rely more on publisher content. Since the beginning of the year, rival artificial intelligence businesses have signed content licensing agreements with dozens of newspapers.

Some arrangements, like OpenAI’s April partnership with the Financial Times, allow the use of articles for AI training.

Experts claim that the amount of training data supplied to an LLM has a direct impact on the quality of its responses.

As competitors such as OpenAI add more content from publishers into its training datasets, Meta may attempt to do the same to ensure its Llama models can compete.

We earlier reported that GoFundMe and Tech giant Meta are unveiling new social sharing capabilities to increase support for charities on Instagram and Facebook, as well as make it easier for users to raise money on GoFundMe using these platforms.
