Atiku Bagudu, Nigeria’s minister of budget and national planning, on Wednesday, joined in celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child.
Bagudu, who attended the Northern Nigeria Conference on Education, urged leaders and stakeholders to support the federal government’s efforts in addressing the pressing issue of out-of-school children.
Speaking at an event to mark the occasion in Abuja, the minister emphasised educating girls and recognising their potential as contributors to the nation’s development.
He also noted the importance of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The minister, the immediate past governor of Kebbi state, echoed the widely held sentiment that educating a girl is equivalent to educating an entire nation.
He called upon all governors, particularly those in Northern Nigeria, to prioritise efforts to improve literacy levels in the region.
He further stressed the importance of education and literacy in driving progress and development.
Experts say the statement by Bagudu highlights his strong commitment to education and his active participation in addressing the educational challenges facing Northern Nigeria.
In a statement, the ministry said, ”Bagudu’s engagement in these initiatives sends a positive message to the public and fellow leaders, encouraging a more concerted effort to improve education and empower girls in Nigeria.”
