Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has warned that Mohamed Salah is putting his Liverpool legacy at risk.
Salah recently expressed frustration with Liverpool, claiming on Saturday that the club had “thrown him under the bus” and hinting at a strained relationship with head coach Arne Slot.
Speaking on his latest podcast, Rooney argued that Slot now needs to assert his authority and suggested that the Egypt international should sit out Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League clash with Inter Milan and next weekend’s Premier League game against Brighton.
“Arne Slot has to show his authority and pull him in and say, ‘You are not travelling with the team; what you said is not acceptable. Take yourself off to AFCON and let everything calm down. If I were him, there would be no way he would be on the team,” Rooney said.
The former England captain added that Salah must either reconcile his differences with Slot or consider leaving Liverpool. “It needs to be sorted out quickly either way,” Rooney said, emphasising the urgency of the situation.
Rooney also questioned why Salah, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017, chose to air his grievances publicly. “He is absolutely destroying his legacy at Liverpool. It would be sad for him to throw it all away. He’s gone about it all wrong,” Rooney added.
The comments highlight growing tensions at Anfield, with Salah’s future and his standing at the club now under scrutiny amid mounting speculation and public disagreements.
