On Monday, the United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC), Martin Griffiths, stated that over one million people had evacuated from the southern region of the Gaza Strip. This was in anticipation of an imminent ground invasion by Israel.
Griffiths stressed the importance of getting aid into Gaza to help both those on the move and those already in the coastal enclave, as they will not be able to leave.
Griffiths said the UN is in “hourly” talks with Israel regarding aid access, and his main message was “urgency” in light of the deteriorating supply situation in Gaza.
He plans to travel on Tuesday to Cairo to meet senior Egyptian officials to discuss the opening of the southern Gaza border for aid.
