The long-awaited repayment process for Mt. Gox creditors has been extended yet again. The now-defunct Bitcoin exchange, which suffered a massive security breach in 2014, has pushed the repayment deadline to October 31, 2025—one year later than the previously scheduled date.
Attorney Nobuaki Kobayashi, the court-appointed Rehabilitation Trustee, announced the extension in a notice issued on October 10, 2024.
He explained that the delay is necessary to allow more time for creditors to complete the required procedures to receive their funds.
Many creditors have faced difficulties throughout the process, including incomplete documentation and other issues, further complicating the rehabilitation efforts.
Since the 2014 hack that saw hundreds of thousands of Bitcoin lost, Mt. Gox has been slowly navigating the complex task of compensating its creditors.
Despite distributing billions of dollars so far, the sheer volume of claims and the legal hurdles involved have made the process lengthy.
While some creditors have been compensated, others remain in limbo, awaiting payments amid procedural challenges.
