N100,000 salary isn't enough in today's Nigeria - Banker laments as economic reforms continue

Mahmud Galadanci, a banker, has lamented over the woes faced by low-income earners in the country.

Galadanci, who is also an information security officer, made the observation in a social media post on Friday, July 30.

He said the situation of things has made the country to be in a ‘mess.’

His words:

”N100,000 salary isn’t enough in today’s Nigeria. This is for singles, not the ones having a family. I don’t think N100,000 can sustain someone with family.

”Bills, unexpected expenses, transport and above all, feeding. And before one gets the N100,000 jobs is another wahala. We are in a mess!!!”

Experts say as the inflation bites harder in Nigeria, salaries, including that of government workers, should be reviewed.

This is because people are now paying more for basic stuff like food but still earning the same.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, recently joined the calls for salary review, noting that it was one of the ways to strengthen the fight against corruption and impunity in the country.

Kemi Lala Akindoju, a Nigerian actress,  weighed in on the issue recently by saying:

”I hope bosses in Nigeria allow their staff to come into the office for fewer days in the midst of all this chaos. With the sudden hike in the cost of transportation and no increase in salaries, it is extra hard for people.”

The recent economic reforms by the Tinubu-led administration had also made matters worse as the government has failed to provide palliatives for citizens despite the increment in essential items and services.
