The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Nasarawa State Chapter has alleged that suspected members of the APC in the state have impersonated its officials, and has urged the security agencies to investigate the matter to unmask the perpetrators of the heinous act.
On Friday morning, a group of young people, known to be well-connected to the PDP, held a press conference in Lafia. The group accused the judges of the Court of First Instance in Nasarawa of erroneously declaring the party’s candidate, Mr David Ombugugadu, the winner of the 18th March 2023 election on the basis of religious sentiments.
The group’s Chairman, Mr. Daniel Agbo, said that after careful examination of the ruling of the court, it became apparent that merit had been compromised by religious considerations. If not, how can you justify such an ill-advised decision where out of the three Judges, two are Christian one is Muslim and one is a candidate of APC?
This is regrettable and cannot be condoned. We appeal to the parties involved, particularly the Judges, to properly review the judgment of the tribunal and set aside it. This judgment should be free of any religious or other bias, as evidenced by the findings of the lower court.
The PDP Youth Leader in Lafia, Mr Muhammed SANI, denied knowing anything about the group or how it works. He urged the people of the state not to accept it in its entirety. Sani said the PDP would not be swayed by those who do not have the best interests of the party or the governorship candidate in mind.
The PDP wishes to express its full support for the verdict of the tribunal that led to the removal of the governor of Nasarawa state, Abdullahi Sule. The tribunal’s ruling is based on the facts and the law, and the PDP has full faith in the tribunal’s decision. We would never condemn ourselves or try to undermine a ruling that respects the law and democracy.
We have come to know that the current government in the state of Nasarawa is sponsoring non-PDP groups. This is because of the inflammatory religious statements made by the governor of the state at the recently held Summit in Abuja, which has caused the people to be divided along religious lines, not between the PDP and the other parties.
Therefore, the current administration is sponsoring these groups to further spread their agenda. The PDP has categorically denied its involvement in the press conference and reiterates its determination to abide by the judgment of the court and to uphold the lawfulness of the matter, Sani said.
At the time of writing, attempts to get a response from the state’s APC’s Publicity Secretary Douglas Otaru were unsuccessful as his telephone line was not picking up.
