The National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria (NASWDEN) has unveiled its ambitious goal to generate five million more jobs within the scrap and waste management industry by the close of 2025.
This revelation was made by Alhaji Suleiman Lateef, the Founding Chairman and head of NASWDEN’s Board of Trustees, during the official swearing-in of the association’s Caretaker Committee in Abuja.
According to Lateef, the association continues to educate its members on their obligations as responsible employers in Nigeria’s labour ecosystem.
“We have created about 10 million jobs, but we aim to add five million to make it 15 million before the end of this year,” he stated.
Lateef emphasised the organisation’s zero-tolerance policy toward vandalism, noting that all members are expected to comply with legal and ethical standards. He highlighted that NASWDEN’s internal disciplinary structure handles violations decisively.
He also noted that the recently inaugurated committee would oversee preparations leading to the association’s delegate conference scheduled for later this year.
Supporting the Chairman’s remarks, NASWDEN’s Deputy BOT Chairman, Mr. Edward Ella, reiterated that the group is strictly composed of legitimate scrap dealers. He clarified that members work with end users and companies specialising in the recycling of iron rods and steel, rather than engaging in unlawful activities.
“There is no member of NASWDEN that is involved in vandalism; rather, we create jobs to boost the economy,” Ella maintained.
Also present, Mr. Stephen Obayuwana, Founding Secretary of the association, extended appreciation to the Minister of Labour and Productivity for fostering stability within NASWDEN.
Chairman of the newly constituted committee, Mr. Uko Iwaudofia, pledged to enhance transparency within the sector and intensify efforts to root out vandals.
“This is a multi-billion-naira sector which has and is contributing greatly to the economy of the country,” he noted.
He further emphasised that NASWDEN members play a key role in supplying rolling mill companies across the country, particularly in industrial hubs such as Lagos, Kano, and Ikorodu.
As a crucial player in Nigeria’s waste management and recycling ecosystem, NASWDEN continues to support efforts to reduce reliance on imported raw materials, while also collaborating with government agencies to refine policies that govern the sector.
