The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has urged the public to remain calm amidst concerns regarding the security of Nigerian airspace due to alleged radar coverage issues.
The controversy began over the weekend following a statement attributed to the NCAA, cautioning airline operators against flying into restricted areas after the National Security Adviser reported unauthorized aircraft activities.
In a statement by its Acting Director General, Chris Najomo, the NCAA dismissed the concerns, asserting that the Nigerian airspace remains secure and well-monitored.
The statement clarified that the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is actively upgrading its Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) system to meet increasing demands for air traffic efficiency.
Najomo reassured the public that the recent incidents involving aircraft straying into restricted airspace were due to adverse weather conditions, not radar malfunctions.
According to him, NAMA’s radars in Abuja successfully tracked the violations, providing full details of the aircraft and operators involved.
Similar radar installations in Lagos, Kano, and Port-Harcourt ensure comprehensive surveillance capabilities,” he added.
The NCAA also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance radar coverage with five new Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) stations in Obubbra, Ilorin, Talata Mafara, Maiduguri, and Numan, which will augment the existing radar centres.
”This initiative is part of the Minister of Aviation’s five-point agenda to improve aviation infrastructure,” Najomo noted.
Addressing concerns about the welfare of Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs), Najomo stated that the NCAA had recently mediated in a dispute between ATCOs and NAMA regarding remuneration and working conditions.
”The NCAA is committed to aligning with the Minister’s agenda on capacity development, ensuring that all aviation professionals receive adequate support and competitive compensation,” Najomo stated.
The NCAA reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of airspace security and operational efficiency.
”The ongoing radar system upgrades and focus on improving the welfare of aviation personnel underscore the authority’s dedication to ensuring safe and efficient air travel in Nigeria,” Najomo asserted.
Recall that before the rainy season, the NCAA called for caution and heightened vigilance from all stakeholders in the aviation industry.
Najomo highlighted the increased risk of severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms, microbursts, low-level wind shear, and heavy rain during this period, posing potential dangers to air travel safety.
‘’Passengers are encouraged to exercise patience and understanding, as flight delays and cancellations may occur during the rainy season, to prioritize safety. Strict adherence to safety regulations is mandatory, with potential consequences for non-compliance,’’ he stated.
