The 2024 International Water Association (IWA) Conference in Toronto, Canada, concluded with Nigeria making notable strides in its water and sanitation agenda.
Led by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, the Nigerian delegation actively participated in various activities, including bilateral and multilateral engagements, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable water management.
The conference gathered global leaders, experts, and stakeholders to discuss critical issues related to sustainability in water supply and sanitation, with a particular focus on the challenges posed by climate change.
The discussions aligned with the Minister’s vision of repositioning Nigeria’s water sector to meet future demands.
As Nigeria faces the impacts of climate change on water availability and sanitation, Engr. Prof. Utsev highlighted the need for innovative solutions and international collaboration.
The conference provided an essential platform for exchanging ideas with other nations, fostering partnerships to drive progress in the sector.
In recognition of his leadership and commitment to advancing water resources management, Engr. Prof. Utsev is set to become the Vice President of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) for the West African Region in February 2025.
This upcoming role emphasizes Nigeria’s growing influence and leadership in the regional water sector.
The Minister expressed gratitude for the support and active participation of the Nigerian delegation at the IWA conference, reiterating Nigeria’s dedication to implementing the conference’s outcomes to achieve sustainable water and sanitation services for all Nigerians.
Meanwhile, the minister recently called for a robust Public-Private Partnership (PPP) investment in the water sector to achieve sustainable and equitable access to water and sanitation services for Nigerians.
Professor Utsev urged state governors, development partners, and the private sector to prioritize investment in the water sector.
He emphasized that the Federal Government will continue to support states through interventions to provide clean and safe water and improve sanitation for all.
