In response to the escalating insecurity crisis in Nigeria, prominent Nigerian rights activist and author Raphael Adebayo has made a bold call for the legalization and democratization of access to firearms and ammunition in the country.
Adebayo emphasized that the current state of insecurity, with Nigerians facing threats from Islamist terrorists, Fulani herders, and violent criminals, necessitates a reevaluation of existing policies.
In a comprehensive 15-point statement released on January 20, 2024, Adebayo highlighted the failure of the Nigerian state to fulfil its constitutional mandate of ensuring the security and welfare of its citizens.
He cited instances of military recklessness and the validation of public suspicion that citizens have become vulnerable targets for various threats.
The activist recounted recent incidents of violence, including reckless killings by security forces, brutal attacks by terrorists, and the slaughter of innocent civilians.
Adebayo pointed out that the police-to-population ratio in Nigeria is grossly insufficient, contributing to the vulnerability of ordinary Nigerians.
Adebayo called for a declaration of a State of Emergency on Insecurity in Nigeria and urged the government to legalize gun ownership for individuals above 18 years who are mentally fit to protect themselves, their properties, and their families.
He cited Section 33 (2) (a) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which supports the right of Nigerians to defend themselves and their properties.
Highlighting Nigeria’s high prevalence of illegal small arms and light weapons, Adebayo argued that equal access to legally purchase, own, and use firearms and ammunition is crucial for the safety of ordinary citizens.
He further stressed that the right to self-defence should not be restricted to the rich and powerful.
The statement concluded with Adebayo asserting that, given the failure of the Nigerian state to protect its citizens adequately, it is time for the people to have the means to defend themselves.
”Since the Nigerian state can no longer protect the people, it is time for them to protect themselves,” he stated.
