Nigeria has taken a significant step in addressing climate change by submitting its Long Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
This makes Nigeria one of the first three African countries to submit such a plan.
The LT-LEDS outlines Nigeria’s vision and aspirations for sustainable, low-carbon, and climate-resilient development by 2060.
Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal provided insights into the policy framework during a presentation in Abuja to high-level stakeholders from priority sectors.
Lawal emphasized that the LT-LEDS marks the beginning of ”a transformative journey towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.”
”The document, already deposited at the UNFCCC, serves as a roadmap for actions to meet Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and its pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
”Now, it’s time for the public presentation of the policy document to high-level stakeholders, including ministers, National Assembly members, and representatives of key departments and agencies.
”This presentation aims to familiarize stakeholders with the document’s provisions and accelerate its implementation,” he added.
The minister also acknowledged the support of development partners such as the NDC Partnership, 2050 Pathways Platform, and the French Development Agency (AFD).
He further called for collective action and solidarity to achieve significant reductions in emissions and combat climate change effectively.
