Nigerian govt condemns Israel's airstrike on Gaza civilian camp, calls for immediate ceasefire

The Nigerian government has strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrike on a civilian camp in Rafah, Gaza.

The attack, which resulted in the tragic deaths of approximately 45 individuals, predominantly women and children, sparked outrage and condemnation from the Nigerian government.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, expressed Nigeria’s deep concern for the safety and welfare of the civilian population in Gaza, denouncing the airstrike as part of a disturbing pattern of strikes targeting non-combatants.

The minister emphasized the need to protect the fundamental human rights of civilians in Gaza and called for an immediate cessation of violence.

The statement from Nigeria comes amidst growing international outcry over the escalating violence in the region.

Ambassador Tuggar urged all stakeholders, including Israel, Palestine, the United Nations, and the international community, to intensify efforts towards a swift resolution of the conflict and the establishment of a lasting ceasefire.

“Nigeria, therefore, strongly maintains the stance that the fundamental human rights, including and especially that to life, of the vulnerable civilian population of Gaza must be preserved at all cost,” Tuggar added.

Recall that Michael Freeman, the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria and Permanent Representative of Israel to ECOWAS, recently expressed Israel’s unwavering commitment to enhancing bilateral ties with Nigeria for mutual economic growth.

In an interview with journalists in Abuja, the ambassador emphasised bolstering ties with Nigeria in various sectors, including the economy, agriculture, cyber, health, education, and homeland security.
He also reiterated Israel’s eagerness to collaborate with Nigeria on multiple fronts, fostering a better future for both nations.
