Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former Governor of Kano State, has announced a planned defection from his New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), news.ng reports.
In a post monitored by this news platform on X on Saturday evening, the former chieftain of the NNPP is scheduled to announce his defection on Monday, March 30, 2026, in Kano State.
According to a source close to the development, Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, will formally register with the party on Monday.
This comes shortly after a video surfaced of his visit to the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, at his Abuja home on Saturday, as well as former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, on Friday.
In a post on X Saturday, Atiku confirmed receiving Kwankwaso. “This evening, I received the former Governor of Kano State and the Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), H.E Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on a courtesy visit. We had a robust discussion on the state of the nation.”
News.ng recalled that Kwankwaso, a former Minister of Defence from 2003 to 2007, under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, contested on the platform of the NNPP in the 2023 presidential election and came fourth with over one million votes according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Meanwhile, this development has elicited reactions from Nigerians on X.
According to a user, @bariagara, reacted saying, “The ADC National Convention is going to be one of the most intense political battlegrounds we have ever seen because nobody wants to step down. However, anyone who understands the ruthless math of this mega-alliance knows that Peter Obi is not walking out of that convention as the presidential flagbearer. He will likely be outmanoeuvred for the top spot, and as strategic as that might be for the party, it is a very sad and bitter reality for the South East.”
Another user, @johneagle, noted, “Hmmmmm Nigeria’s political space is heating up—APC convention moves, PDP unveiling its venue, Kwankwaso visiting Atiku in Abuja, and leaders sending condolences to El-Rufai. These aren’t random—they signal strategy, alliances, and what’s ahead. Are we watching or preparing to engage? .”
Also, another user @_Street_General said, “At this stage, it’s only coalition that can unseat Tinubu just as it was done to GEJ. I hope na pray they will not come and start fighting themselves.”
It is expected that more political moves will unfold as parties begin to organise their national conventions that will set the tone ahead of the 2027 general elections.
