Nigeria’s 9mobile Transforms into T2, Targets Digital-First Future

Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape shifted on Friday as 9mobile officially rebranded to T2, unveiling plans to reposition itself as a digital-first operator driven by innovation and enhanced customer experience.

Chief Executive Officer Obafemi Banigbe emphasised that the change represents more than a name swap.

“We are no longer who we were; we are becoming something greater, more ambitious, and more in tune with the future,” he stated during the launch ceremony in Lagos.

The rebranding event drew prominent figures, including the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and other key players in the telecom sector.

T2 aims to reinvent its operations through the adoption of cloud technology, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics, enabling quicker service deployment and more personalised offerings. The company is particularly targeting Nigeria’s expanding community of startups, creative professionals, and remote workers—segments that are fuelling demand for flexible and accessible digital solutions.

While reflecting on the company’s journey, Banigbe admitted to past challenges but framed them as sources of strength:

“Our challenges are reminders, not defeats.”

He said, reaffirming that customer experience will remain central to the company’s growth strategy.

Expressing appreciation to regulators, investors, partners, and employees, Banigbe dedicated the transformation to “every Nigerian dreaming of something better” and encouraged the nation to “reimagine, rebuild and relaunch.”

The brand overhaul follows a landmark three-year national roaming partnership sealed in July with MTN Nigeria. Approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission, the agreement grants T2 subscribers access to MTN’s nationwide network, significantly boosting service quality and coverage, especially in underserved locations. The deal underscores a broader movement within Nigeria’s telecom industry towards strategic collaborations to optimise resources in a highly competitive market.

The company’s roots trace back to 2008 when it debuted as Etisalat Nigeria—a partnership between UAE-based Etisalat Group, Mubadala Development Company, and local investors. It quickly attracted a youthful customer base, introducing 3G and 4G LTE services and amassing over 15 million subscribers by 2012.

However, regulatory hurdles, mounting debt, and stiff competition eventually eroded its market position. By 2017, a debt burden of about $1.2 billion forced the exit of the Etisalat Group. The operator then underwent restructuring, adopted the 9mobile brand, and experienced a change in ownership when Teleology Holdings Limited took control in late 2018.
