Nigeria’s Crude Oil Output Drops to 1.45 million bpd in May — NUPRC

Crude oil output in Nigeria fell to 1,452,941 barrels per day (bpd) in May 2025, according to the most recent figures from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The output level reflects a 2.20% reduction from the 1,485,700-bpd recorded in April, highlighting continued volatility in Nigeria’s upstream performance.

When condensates are factored in, total production dropped slightly from 1.68 million bpd in April to 1.65 million bpd in May, based on NUPRC’s updated production statistics.

Condensates, which are light hydrocarbon liquids comparable to high API crude, are typically extracted from natural gas streams during field separation, occurring as pressure and temperature are reduced to atmospheric levels.

The Commission further revealed that May’s average crude production reached 97% of Nigeria’s 1.5 million bpd quota set by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

“Lowest and Peak Combined crude oil and Condensate Production in May were 1.61 million bpd and 1.810 million bpd, respectively,” the commission said.

“The daily average production in May was 1,657,435 barrels per day, comprising both Crude oil (1,452,941 bpd) and condensate (204,493 bpd).”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) reported in its April 2025 data release that total oil and condensate output stood at 1.61 million barrels per day, continuing the downward trend from January’s 1.67 million bpd.

However, gas production saw an uptick, rising from 7,120 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) in February to 7,354 mmscf/d.

On the financial front, NNPC Ltd posted a revenue of ₦5.89 trillion for the month and declared a ₦748 billion profit after tax. Statutory remittances for the first quarter of 2025 totalled ₦4.225 trillion.

Additionally, the company disclosed plans to embark on major capital investments, including four key Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) scheduled for the fourth quarter of the year. These projects are:

Ntokon Development Project (OML 102)

Crude Oil Production Expansion Project (OML 29)

Gas Development Projects (OMLs 30 and 42)

Brass Fertilizer Project

The NNPC noted that these initiatives are central to its wider agenda to improve output efficiency, expand revenue streams, and support diversification within Nigeria’s energy landscape. Of particular importance is the Brass Fertilizer Project, which is expected to reduce fertilizer imports, support local agriculture, and boost food security by supplying domestic demand.
