Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) has announced that its $4.3 billion Train-7 project has reached 67% completion, employing over 9,000 Nigerians.
The project aims to increase NLNG’s production capacity from 22 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) to 30 mtpa.
In a statement by Andy Odeh, NLNG’s General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, the company highlighted the achievement of over 45 million man-hours of construction without any Lost Time Injury (LTI).
”The Train-7 project, located at Bonny Island in Rivers State, is being executed by the SCD consortium, which includes Saipem, Chiyoda, and Daewoo, with Saipem as the lead contractor.
”The expansion is set to deliver significant economic benefits to Nigeria, including job creation and support for local businesses.
”The Train-7 project is not only a critical step for NLNG in expanding its production capabilities but also a significant contributor to Nigeria’s economic growth and energy sector development,” Odeh said.
During a session with the Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committee on Gas, NLNG officials provided updates and clarifications on the project.
They reiterated the project’s strategic importance in monetizing Nigeria’s gas resources, estimated at over 200 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of proven reserves, and supporting the country’s energy transition goals.
NLNG emphasized that the Train-7 project aligns with Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” initiative, which aims to enhance gas monetization and utilization as part of the broader strategy to secure the nation’s energy future amidst the global shift towards a net-zero future.
The company expressed its commitment to working with the National Assembly and other stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the project.
In its reaction, the joint National Assembly panel encouraged NLNG to maintain its schedule and continue fostering an environment conducive to attracting more transformational projects to Nigeria.
On his part, Mr Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), recently reiterated the crucial role of bridging the energy access gap in driving Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
Delivering a keynote address at the 2024 Society of Petroleum Engineers Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum in Abuja, Kyari emphasized NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to developing the necessary infrastructure to deliver oil and gas, thereby fueling economic growth across the nation.
The NNPC chief also discussed the company’s efforts to expand gas supply to the international market through projects like the NLNG Train 7 and initiatives aimed at kick-starting Train 8 and various floating LNG projects.
