Mallam Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) Limited, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding the availability of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across Nigeria.
Speaking on Thursday during the simultaneous commissioning of 12 CNG stations in Abuja and Lagos, Kyari emphasized that the initiative to enhance access to CNG is now irreversible.
Kyari stated that NNPC Ltd, in collaboration with its partners, will also establish three Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) stations in Ajaokuta.
He acknowledged that while the initiative may seem overdue, substantial progress will be made to mitigate the volatility associated with Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and ensure a stable gas supply.
Kyari expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support in promoting domestic gas utilization, aimed at providing Nigerians with a cleaner and more affordable energy source.
He assured that NNPC Ltd will continue implementing strategic gas projects in alignment with the Presidential CNG Initiative, which aims to bring prosperity to all Nigerians and secure the nation’s energy future.
Mr. Huub Stokman, Managing Director of NNPC Retail Limited, announced that over the next year, NNPC Retail plans to launch more than 100 CNG sites, including 16 sites developed in partnership with NNPC Gas Marketing and NIPCO Gas JV.
He highlighted that CNG offers a cost-effective alternative to existing fuel products, being approximately 40% cheaper than petrol in Nigeria.
”Continued investments will further integrate CNG into Nigeria’s energy mix,” he added.
On his part, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, noted that the commissioning of the CNG stations will provide significant economic benefits by creating jobs, stimulating local economies, and contributing to Nigeria’s goals of reducing emissions and combating climate change.
Also speaking, Chief Pius Akinyelure, Chairman of the NNPC Board of Directors, emphasized that increased adoption of CNG will reduce fuel costs for both consumers and businesses, fostering broader economic benefits.
Following the removal of the fuel subsidy and the declaration of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas initiatives, NNPC Limited has spearheaded the deployment of Auto-CNG Stations across Nigeria.
NNPC Gas Marketing Limited, a subsidiary of NNPC Limited, in partnership with NIPCO Gas Limited, has devised a rollout plan for the construction of thirty-five (35) CNG stations across various geographical zones of Nigeria.
The initiative is part of NNPC Limited’s commitment to delivering cleaner, cheaper energy alternatives to Nigerians while supporting the nation’s broader economic and environmental goals.
Meanwhile, NNPC has partnered with First Exploration and Petroleum Development Company Limited to announce their plans to achieve an average oil production of 20,000 barrels per day on the new OML 85 platform located in Bayelsa State.
According to NNPC spokesperson Olufemi Soneye, this milestone reflects President Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to enhancing production from the country’s oil and gas assets by fostering a conducive environment for current and prospective investors.
“The oil produced from the OML 85 platform, also known as the Madu Field, will undergo processing at the joint venture’s Abigail-Joseph Floating Production Storage and Offloading unit, with a storage capacity of up to 800,000 barrels of crude oil,” he noted.
