Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central, has made a controversial statement claiming there is no ideological difference between the ruling party and the opposition, news.ng reports.

In a recent podcast on ‘Mic On’, the former lawmaker argued that the country’s political process is not built on philosophical foundations such as socialism, Marxism, or neoliberalism.

He added that a change in leadership may not necessarily change the style of governance.

According to him, “When you are talking of opposition in Nigeria, you are not talking about these ones are Marxist, these ones are socialist, and the other ones are neoliberals. There is nothing like that. If you give Obi or Atiku power, it will still be the same thing that they will do.

“The difference that you may be able to have is cosmetic, but ideologically, none of them is opposed to IMF and World Bank policies.

“What is the idea? All of them have been in government. Which idea do they have?”

Oftentimes, politicians, whether gubernatorial or presidential candidates, promise to transform the country when they get into power, but change hardly occurs, according to Sani.

“Many of them come to power with the idea of turning their state or their whatever into Dubai or whatever it is. But where is Dubai?” he queried.

On the level of progress, Sani said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shares the same ideology as the likes of Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, among others, claiming that the calibre of politicians that were in power from 1999 to 2023 are the same.

“f you are looking for people who destroyed this country from 1999 to 2015, they are in the ADC… from 2015 to 2023, they are in the ADC,” he said.
