Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has made his intentions clear ahead of Benin Republic’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash with Nigeria—he’s not in Uyo for nostalgia, but for victory.

The German tactician, who guided Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2019 AFCON semi-finals, returns to familiar territory—the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium—this time as the enemy in charge of Benin’s national team.

Speaking to journalists upon arrival, Rohr delivered a confident message that immediately set the tone for what promises to be a tense and emotional showdown.

“I have great memories here in Uyo,” Rohr said. “But I’m not here for memories. I’m here with Benin to win. Nigeria are favourites, yes, but we believe in ourselves, and we’ll fight for every ball.”

The coach acknowledged the Super Eagles’ depth and attacking power but emphasized that his side has developed a strong tactical identity—one built on discipline, teamwork, and counterattacking precision.

“We know how strong Nigeria is—I built part of that team,” he admitted. “But football is unpredictable. If you prepare well and play as a unit, you can shock anyone.”

Rohr, who spent five years in charge of the Super Eagles before his dismissal in late 2021, said facing his former players will be an emotional but professional experience.

“I respect many of those boys—Troost-Ekong, Ndidi, Iwobi, and Simon—I coached them,” he said. “But once the whistle blows, there are no friends. I’m focused on helping my team succeed.”

His words have already electrified the build-up to the qualifier, adding a personal subplot to a game already rich in stakes. Nigeria, led by captain William Troost-Ekong, is desperate for a win to keep their qualification hopes alive after a shaky start to the campaign.
