The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has successfully captured Taiwo Megbowon, a deportee who falsely claimed to be a U.S. Army captain, on charges of engaging in visa racketeering in Ondo.
Accused of deceiving unsuspecting individuals in Okitipupa LGA, Mr Megbowon purported to be a travel agent, offering assistance in securing visas for travel to America.
Commandant Oluyemi Ibiloye of the NSCDC in Ondo disclosed the arrest, revealing that after duping victims in Okitipupa, Megbowon had fled to Akure to continue his fraudulent activities.
According to Mr. Ibiloye, the suspect was apprehended after swindling N300,000 from a female victim, promising her a slot in the U.S. Army. Megbowon had claimed to be a U.S. Army captain on annual leave in Nigeria when he initiated contact with the victim online on May 2, 2023.
“He promised the complainant a slot to work in America and asked her to deposit N300,000 into his bank account. After the money was paid into his bank account, he stopped picking up his victims’ telephone calls until he was tracked and arrested in Akure,” stated the NSCDC commandant.
While denying his alleged U.S. Army captaincy during interrogation, Megbowon admitted to having obtained his second degree in the U.S. before being deported. The NSCDC is set to charge the suspect in court to face the legal consequences of his actions.
