Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has expressed strong confidence in Nigeria’s chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, stressing that head coach Eric Chelle must show firmness and independence for the team to succeed.
Nigeria will compete alongside 23 other nations when the tournament kicks off from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026. The team heads into the competition seeking redemption after failing to qualify for the World Cup and falling short during the playoffs.
Under Chelle, the Super Eagles have been drawn against Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda in the group stage — a lineup expected to test the team’s resolve and preparation ahead of the continental showdown.
Speaking on the Oliseh Insight Podcast, the former national team captain voiced optimism about Nigeria’s prospects, saying he believes the team has the quality to deliver a strong performance in Morocco.
Oliseh also advised Chelle to maintain a firm stance in his decision-making as pressure around player selection intensifies. He noted that external influences have historically tried to interfere with coaching decisions and urged the manager to trust his instincts and protect the team’s integrity.
According to Oliseh, Chelle must show personality, take responsibility, and remain steadfast against external pressures if the Super Eagles are to flourish at the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has announced that the team will play several friendly matches as part of their buildup to the AFCON.
