Former Super Eagles midfielder and coach Sunday Oliseh has expressed fears that the form of the senior national team may drop despite their impressive performance at the just concluded AFCON 2023, hosted by Cote d’Ivoire.
Oliseh shared his thoughts on the form of the Super Eagles moving forward during an interview with Channels TV and said that he fears that the team could suffer a downward spiral after finishing second at the 2023 AFCON following a 1-2 loss to the hosts.
The former Ajax and Cologne FC player argued that after winning the AFCON in 2013 under the tutelage of Stephen Keshi, Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2015 and 2017 AFCON.
“We are at a dangerous point as a football country. After my generation stopped, Nigeria stopped winning and becoming relevant. We started celebrating ‘golden bronze’. But Keshi was able to come up and make up a team that won the 2013 AFCON,” Oliseh told Channels TV.
“However, immediately after that, we did not qualify for the 2015 and 2017 AFCON. Even though it was 2015, the coach, in my opinion, is still one of the top coaches that we’ve ever had. So we had a nosedive then, which is something I am afraid may happen again, and that is something we have to fight against.”
