Princess Folashade Ogunwusi-Fadairo, the sister to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has claimed that the monarch does not like polygamy.
Folashade told The Punch newspaper in an interview that circumstances forced her brother to marry many wives.
The princess stated that marrying many wives must have been a difficult choice for the monarch to make.
She explained that being a traditional ruler, the Oba had to follow the tradition of polygamy that is expected of people who hold such a position.
Folashade said:
“Where the Yoruba are coming from, polygamy is expected. And being the progenitor of the Yoruba race, inu e ni won bi wa si (we were born in it). For instance, my grandfather had eight wives, that’s paternal and my maternal grandfather had about seven or eight wives too. So, it’s something he had to do, although, I think he avoided it.”
