While Sony Music is dissuading AI tech companies from the unauthorised usage of its materials, Reddit and OpenAI have partnered to incorporate Reddit’s content into ChatGPT, a popular chatbot.
Steve Huffman, co-founder and CEO of Reddit, confirmed the partnership in a blog post seen by Newsng on Friday.
Newsng understands that partnership is comparable to the $60 million deal Reddit purportedly inked with Google earlier this year.
According to the post, OpenAI will use Reddit’s Data API to obtain real-time, unique, and structured content from the social media network, enabling it to deliver Reddit content to ChatGPT and future products.
“This will enable OpenAI’s AI tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content, especially on recent topics,” the post said.
Google and Reddit also recently struck a partnership in February that gives the internet giant access to Reddit data for AI model training.
There are concerns about whether using such content to train AI systems violates copyright in the US and the EU, or if fair use and “temporary copying” provisions apply.
“Reddit has become one of the Internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything,” Steve Huffman, co-founder and CEO of Reddit, said in the post.
“Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit.”
OpenAI has recently reached agreements with some media, including the Financial Times and the Associated Press.
Reacting to the partnership, Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer at OpenAI, said in the post: “We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with uniquely timely and relevant information, and to explore the possibilities to enrich the Reddit experience with AI-powered features.”
