ChatGPT parent OpenAI is set to match past Google with plans to announce its AI-powered search product on Monday.
The announcement date, which is open to change, may have been purposefully scheduled to be made right before Google’s annual I/O conference next week, where the company is anticipated to unveil several new artificial intelligence technologies, according to two people familiar with the situation that Reuters cited.
Google’s 20-year dominance is set to be challenged as per a report by Bloomberg with OpenAI’s new search feature would not only take on Google but also upstart AI-powered search provider Perplexity AI Inc.
Perplexity AI, a firm creating generative artificial intelligence search engines, recently disclosed that it has raised $62.7 million in fresh funding, more than tripling its previous round valuation to over $1 billion.
OpenAI is not the first company to introduce an AI search engine; at the moment, Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot dominate the market.
Industry experts claimed that ChatGPT has frequently had trouble conducting web searches and providing pertinent responses based on real-time data.
While ChatGPT’s premium edition is capable of conducting web searches, the results it currently provides are not as comprehensive or well-referenced as those provided by Perplexity.
Assuming the rumours are true, OpenAI’s decision to enter the search market coincides with competitors to the industry’s top AI service expanding their resources, user bases, and capabilities.
Meanwhile, Google has been testing the Search Generative Experience (SGE) with “Labs” testers and quickly enhancing its Gemini AI models and chatbot.
The tech giant has also been attempting to keep its stronghold in the industry with an agreement with Apple to be the search engine of choice for the Safari browser on iPhones.
According to those with knowledge of the situation, who were named in the publication, Apple is trying to license Google’s AI technology to roll out AI-powered features with iOS upgrades later this year.
