The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has raised serious concerns about an alleged alliance between the Labour Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the Edo gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
According to the PDP, the alliance is designed to subvert the will of the people and plunge Edo State into the same turmoil that Nigerians have experienced under APC rule at the federal level.
In a statement signed by Rev. Olu Martins, Deputy Director General of Media and Publicity for the PDP Campaign Council, the party expressed shock at the Labour Party’s decision to enter into what it described as an “unholy pact” with the APC.
The PDP alleged that the Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, who hails from Edo South Senatorial District, is being used by the APC to split votes in that district, thereby minimizing APC’s losses in the election.
Martins condemned the Labour Party for aligning itself with a party that has overseen what he described as “nine years of draconian rule, maladministration, and gross mismanagement of the nation’s economy.”
He stressed that the APC’s government at the federal level has subjected Nigerians to widespread suffering, insecurity, and economic hardship.
He warned that the alliance threatens to bring similar misery to Edo State.
“It is shocking that the Labour Party, which claims to be aware of the suffering and oppression Nigerians have endured, is now working with these same oppressors to bring Edo into bondage,” Martins stated.
The PDP called on the Edo people to reject the Labour Party and the APC, describing the Labour Party as a proxy for the APC’s destructive policies.
Martins added, “A vote for the Labour Party in this election is a vote indirectly cast for the APC, who are our oppressors-in-chief.”
He urged voters to instead rally behind the PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, to ensure the continuation of peace, development, and economic progress in Edo State.
The statement ended with a strong plea to Edo citizens: “To prevent Edo’s descent into the same suffering and torment that Nigerians have endured under APC rule, we must reject these parties in totality and support the PDP’s candidate for the future of our state.”
In a related development, the PDP Youth Alliance for Good Governance (PYGG) has raised alarms about an alleged plot to rig the upcoming Edo State governorship election using ‘federal might.’
The group expressed serious concerns that federal resources and influence are being mobilized to manipulate the election in favour of certain candidates.
Addressing the press recently in Abuja, the PYGG vowed to resist any attempt to undermine the will of the Edo people, warning that such actions could lead to unrest.
