Some members of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have returned over N90 million sent to their individual accounts as “bribes” to support the national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
Those who have returned monies paid to their accounts are; Stella Effah-Attoe (national women leader) Dan Orbih (national vice-chairman (south-south)), and Taofeek Arapaja, deputy national chairman (south).
This comes less than 24 hours after Ayu’s loyalist, Chinemerem Madu, disclosed plans by the vice chairman and other NWC members to derail the chances of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in 2023.
Recall that Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, has continued to demand Ayu’s resignation over alleged corruption.
Wike had accused Ayu of receiving the sum of one billion naira from a presidential hopeful without remitting the same to the PDP account.
According to a series of letters sent in by the NWC members and seen by News. ng, they accused Ayu of trying to cover up financial impropriety under his leadership with the said sum of money sent to them.
“Some national newspapers/social media platforms have also carried stories accusing the NWC members of being placated with bribe of N28,800,000.00,” Affah-Attoe said.
“This development has made me very uncomfortable. Having found myself in such an embarrassing situation, I am hereby refunding to the bank account of our great party at the PDP National Secretariat,” she added.
On his part, Arapaja said he discovered the N36 million alert after “browsing” his phone.
