Mohamed Salah was on target as Egypt defeated Benin Republic 3–1 after extra time in a Round of 16 clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, bringing Benin’s campaign at the tournament to an end.
The match was level at 1–1 after regulation time, with both sides locked in a tense contest that produced few clear chances over the 90 minutes. Egypt, however, asserted their experience in extra time, scoring twice to break Benin’s resistance.
Salah netted one of the extra-time goals, further underlining his importance to the Pharaohs as they continue their push for a record-extending AFCON title. His strike helped seal the victory after Egypt took control early in the added period.
Benin’s elimination means they will not repeat their surprise run to the quarter-finals at the 2019 tournament, as their hopes were ended by Egypt’s late surge.
The win sends Egypt into the quarter-finals, where they will face either hosts Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso. The two sides are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to determine Egypt’s next opponent.
Egypt will return to Agadir on Saturday for the quarter-final tie as they continue their pursuit of continental glory.
