Thiel, a known proponent of prediction markets, previously backed Polymarket alongside Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The platform has gained significant traction on social media and currently ranks as the most-discussed decentralised project without a native token, according to Kaito data.
Polymarket blends speculative betting with real-time analytics, offering markets on geopolitics, finance, and current events. While some users praise its crowd-driven forecasting model, others note its volatile and sometimes illiquid markets.
For instance, prediction odds on whether Iran would block the Strait of Hormuz recently plunged from 50% to 2% within hours. Despite the risks, Polymarket continues to grow in influence, highlighted by a recent partnership with X (formerly Twitter) and a rapid rise in Google search trends.
Compared to other blockchain-based forecasting platforms like Kalshi, Polymarket has carved out a dominant position. Some believe that if the company moves forward with a token launch tied to user activity, it could surpass its current valuation and reshape how digital communities engage with real-world information.
