President Bola Tinubuhas highlighted the critical need for concerted efforts in combating climate change globally.
In an opinion article published on CNN today, President Tinubu underscored the urgency of addressing pressing environmental challenges intertwined with socioeconomic struggles.
Following his participation in the COP28 World Climate Action Summit in Dubai, the President emphasized the gravity of the issue by showcasing the severe impacts Nigeria faces due to climate change.
He said despite navigating hurdles such as the COVID-19 pandemic, economic reforms, and currency rate unification, Nigeria is unwavering in its commitment to reconstruct a cleaner and better nation.
President Tinubu drew attention to the recently launched Nigerian Carbon Market Initiative, noting that it is a testament to Nigeria’s legal commitment to a cleaner world.
However, he also acknowledged the staggering inadequacy of global efforts against climate change, particularly in supporting developing nations that bear the brunt of its impacts.
The President stressed the imperative for urgent international collaboration, citing examples such as the Sahel crisis and the dwindling Lake Chad, urging concerted financing and technological support to safeguard crucial water resources and combat desertification.
He noted that rising ocean levels in southern Nigeria and rampant flooding nationwide pose imminent threats to coastal areas and livelihoods, leaving hundreds dead and thousands homeless.
President Tinubu also spotlighted Nigeria’s initiatives, including tree-planting campaigns and agreements with foreign energy firms, to combat environmental threats.
Moreover, he outlined Nigeria’s ambitious plans, including commitments to eliminate greenhouse gases, develop hydrogen capacity for international export, and transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy through the Nigerian Energy Transition Plan.
In conclusion, President Tinubu called for equitable support in the global economy and highlighted the opportunity for Nigeria and Africa to leapfrog into a green industrial future.
He emphasized that reducing emissions and prioritising equity offers a chance to rectify past imbalances, save the planet, and create a better future for all.
