President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Justice Stella Anukam on her re-election as a Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for another six-year term.
The re-election took place at the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting Executive Council held in Accra, Ghana.
Justice Anukam, a distinguished Nigerian jurist, obtained her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife), Osun State, in 1984, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985.
Besides being a chartered secretary and arbitrator, she has a wealth of experience as an administrator.
Her illustrious career includes serving as the Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in Abuja and as the Director of the International and Comparative Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice.
President Tinubu lauded Justice Anukam for her significant contributions to the development of human rights jurisprudence in Africa.
He urged her to continue leveraging her expertise and insights in her role at the African Court.
In a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting qualified Nigerians in attaining international positions, emphasizing Nigeria’s strategic importance in the global arena.
The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, established by African states, plays a crucial role in ensuring the protection of human and people’s rights across the continent.
It works in conjunction with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The court comprises eleven judges nominated by member states of the African Union and elected by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
Nigeria ratified the protocol establishing the court in 2004 and continues to be a proactive participant.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr Mainasara Umar Kogo as the new Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
Dr. Kogo, a seasoned lawyer and analyst, brings extensive experience in the fields of law, security, economy, politics, and international diplomacy to his new role.
“The President anticipates professionalism, integrity, and fidelity to the nation in the discharge of the functions of the Office of the Chairman of the CCT,” Ngelale said in a statement.
