Otega Ogra, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Digital/New Media, has defended the President’s decision to include his sons, Seyi and Yinka, in the official delegation for the state visit to Doha, Qatar.
Ogra contends that it is not uncommon for leaders worldwide to bring their children on state visits, emphasizing that this practice educates them about global affairs and maintains a semblance of family life amid the demands of public office.
The inclusion of Seyi and Yinka Tinubu in the delegation of 38 individuals accompanying President Tinubu to Qatar has sparked controversy, with critics questioning the transparency and governance principles associated with such appointments.
In defence of the decision, Ogra took to his X handle on Tuesday, stating that leaders bringing their children on official foreign trips is a global norm.
He cited examples such as Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and UK Prime Ministers, highlighting that it can contribute to softening a leader’s public image and enhancing diplomatic relations by showcasing a relatable, family-oriented side.
“The Obamas, Clintons, Bushs, Trumps and others went on tons of foreign trips whilst in office with their families.
“We really need to stop majoring in minors in the name of castigating everything,” he wrote.
