Paris Saint-Germain has confirmed that Achraf Hakimi has sustained a severe ankle sprain, raising major concerns over his availability for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Moroccan right-back picked up the injury during PSG’s Ligue 1 clash over the weekend, and initial fears of a fracture have been ruled out after medical scans. However, the club announced that the defender will be sidelined for six to eight weeks, putting his participation in AFCON in serious doubt.
Hakimi Avoids Fracture But Faces Lengthy Layoff
A club statement released on Thursday confirmed the diagnosis: “Achraf Hakimi has suffered a severe sprain to his right ankle. The player has begun treatment and will continue to be monitored by the medical team. Further updates will follow.”
While the injury is less severe than first feared, the recovery window means Hakimi could miss Morocco’s AFCON 2025 preparations and possibly the early stages of the tournament itself if his rehabilitation extends beyond schedule.
A Major Blow for PSG and Morocco
Hakimi’s injury comes at a critical stage for both club and country. PSG are entering a decisive run of fixtures in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, while Morocco—one of the favourites to lift the AFCON trophy—will be heavily reliant on the 25-year-old’s pace, creativity, and defensive stability down the right flank.
Head coach Walid Regragui and Morocco’s medical staff will be closely monitoring Hakimi’s progress in the coming weeks, with hopes he can recover in time for the continental showpiece.
Outstanding Form Before Injury
Before the setback, Hakimi had been one of PSG’s most consistent performers this season, contributing four assists and two goals across all competitions. His dynamic link-up play with Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé has been a key component of Luis Enrique’s tactical system.
