The political feud between Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, is still gaining traction, as the former remains the only incumbent governor who reportedly failed the screening exercise ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in the state, news.ng reports.
This has led to the governor opting out of the party’s political process for the 2027 elections.
Reacting to the recent development in Rivers State, Mukhtar Shagari said Fubara has the right to participate in the democratic process or choose not to.
Shagari, in an interview on Arise Television on Thursday morning, while\ making reference to Fubara’s remarks, stated that the governor withdrew from the APC’s screening after due consultation with stakeholders in the state.
He said, “Governor Fubara is a mature person. You know, he is; he is well educated. He’s the governor of the state, and like any other Nigerian, he has the right to participate in an election if he wants, and he also has the right not to participate if he doesn’t want.
While Fubara has insisted on remaining in the APC, the former deputy governor urged that the decision of the leader of the party in Rivers State should be respected.
He added: “And I don’t want to insinuate anything because I don’t know his reasons, and I don’t know what has happened, you know, but he said very clear that he has made consultations and so on and that he will still remain in the APC.
“He has not said anybody forced him to do what he has done. It is his own personal decision. So who are we to question his personal decisions? Who are you to question his personal decisions?”
