Rivers United’s Alex Oyowah scores two goals in the final stages as they defeat Etoile Filant 2-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Rivers United missed two penalties and had to wait until the end of the game to beat the Burkina Faso side, who had held them at bay for much of the match.
Oyowah started the scoring about the 89th mins before doubling the lead from the spot in the extra time.
During the first half, Endurance Ebedebiri made an effort from 12 yards saved by the visitors’ goalkeeper, while Farouk Mohamed also hit the post from a second penalty late in the second half.
The Port Harcourt club, like last season, is the only Nigerian team to have made it to the group stages of the African Cup of Nations (Africa) this season. Enyimba (Gabon), Remo Stars (Zanzibar) and Bendel Insurance (Nigeria) have all failed to make it to the group stage, with Enyimba eliminated during the 1st-round, which was the preliminary round (CAF Champions League) losing 3-2 on the aggregate to RS Berkane (Kenya) in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Last season, Stanley Eguma’s team reached the quarter-finals of the competition, losing to Young Africans (Tanzania).
