Former Nigerian international Sam Sodje has endorsed Frank Onyeka’s move to Coventry City, describing the Super Eagles midfielder’s January switch from Brentford as a well-judged career decision.
Onyeka left the Premier League side for the Championship outfit during the winter transfer window, a move that raised eyebrows among some observers, given Brentford’s top-flight status.
However, Sodje insists the context of English football and Coventry’s historical stature make the transfer far more logical than it may appear on the surface.
“My position is based on facts. I am a Brentford boy and a Hall of Fame member at Brentford. Many people discussing this move do not fully understand football,” Sodje told Footy Africa.
He argued that while Brentford currently compete in the Premier League, Coventry’s size and history as a club give it a different standing within English football.
“The Championship is extremely competitive and is equivalent to many countries’ top divisions. Hopefully, Coventry can return to the Premier League,” Sodje said, noting that the division offers a demanding environment for players seeking regular action.
Sodje also pointed out that Onyeka’s decision may have been influenced by the long-term vision presented to him, as well as the opportunity for consistent playing time.
“I believe this is a good move for him. It also shows the type of player he is — someone who wants to play regularly and contribute on the pitch rather than sit on the bench,” he added.
