Sanwo-Olu Unveils New Train Sets to Expand Lagos Blue Line Rail Transport

In a major stride toward transforming Lagos’ urban transportation, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday unveiled three brand-new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line, each consisting of four cars.

The unveiling ceremony took place at the National Theatre Station, a symbolic hub for the city’s cultural and infrastructural aspirations.

With this latest addition to the Blue Line fleet, the state government has effectively doubled the rail system’s passenger capacity. The governor emphasised that this enhancement is aimed at significantly easing the daily commute for thousands of Lagosians.

“Each set includes four cars, and with this addition, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said during the launch. “This will directly improve the commute for thousands of Lagosians, reducing wait times, speeding up journeys, and making the system more reliable overall.”

Sanwo-Olu further revealed that the Lagos State Government is targeting a train frequency of every 10 minutes, which will bring the state closer to world-class transit efficiency.

“Our goal is to have trains arriving every 10 minutes,” he stated. “We’re building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started.”

The governor expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for their unwavering support throughout the project.

“I’m deeply grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for their strong support. From procurement to delivery, their backing made this possible,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The unveiling also marks a prelude to even more ambitious developments on the horizon. The governor disclosed that new trains for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line, which will boast double the capacity of the Blue Line trains, are expected before the end of the year.

“Before the end of the year, we’ll receive new trains for the Red Line, which will have twice the capacity of the Blue Line trains,” he announced.

He also noted that construction is progressing on Phase 2 of the Blue Line extension, which will connect Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, further expanding the reach and impact of Lagos’ rail network.

As Lagos continues to grow as one of Africa’s largest urban centres, the state government’s commitment to infrastructure development and modern public transport is seen as a cornerstone of its long-term vision.

“This is more than just trains; it’s about improving lives, cutting down traffic gridlock, and setting Lagos on a path to sustainable urban development,” Sanwo-Olu concluded.

The new train sets are expected to go into operation within the coming weeks, further reinforcing the government’s promise of a safer, faster, and more comfortable commuting experience for the people of Lagos.

News.ng reported last Thursday the delivery of three new train sets—comprising 12 coaches—for the Blue Line Rail project.

The governor, who made the announcement, explained that the new additions will help reduce passenger waiting times and improve travel comfort on the rail line.

“I’m happy to share that we have taken delivery of three brand-new train sets—12 coaches in total—for the Lagos Blue Line Rail,” Sanwo-Olu said. “This means shorter wait times and more comfortable trips for everyone using the Blue Line. It’s a step forward in our efforts to make the daily commute in Lagos less stressful and more reliable,” the governor noted.
